About us

Soapbox is the page of debate on current issues, big and small. It is for anyone who has an opinion they want to air. Are the choices that face humanity Capitalism, Socialism or Barbarism? Or is it whether to buy a Toyota or a Nissan?
What does the future hold? Are we destined to slip into a global era of xenophobic fear and dog-eat-dog contempt for our fellow human beings? Or is there a glimmer of hope in the anti-globalisation movement?
Are John Howard and Kim Beazley the best leaders we can come up with? Why do the seventy three percent of Australians who gave either Liberal/Nationals or Labor their first preference think that our choice is so limited? And why does voting for other candidates seem so futile, especially when most of them are to the right of the major parties. What hope do these leaders hold for the majority who, it seems, have resigned themselves to holding onto lousy jobs while planning out weekends at the beach, drinking sessions, dance parties and retirement? So many of us face each day trying to convince ourselves that our working lives are contributing to a better world, or at least not making it worse. But as each day passes don't you have a sneaking suspicion that it actually is getting worse?
Out there are people who are trying to make things better in their own particular way. Amongst them are the remnants of the great movement of Socialism which seemed to hold out so much promise but now seems to be just a phase of history. Or is it? Is the dream of a world free from exploitation and war so far removed from our present reality that its better to consign it to history before we sink in spirit and seek refuge in anti-depressants?
Here is the place to have your say! See what others are thinking on these questions. There are solutions to the world's problems. There are others just like you who resist, who refuse to go under. They are out there doing their thing. But if we're to have greater impact we have to have debates, deepen our knowledge, not let poor thinking go, challenge weaknesses in what people say and do. If you think I am wrong say so! But come up with something that shows that to be the case. Otherwise your armchair philosophy and cynicism will be nothing more than refuges for intellectual snobbery.
